Stephen Sondheim's final musical production, "Here We Are", inspired by two Buñuel films, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel, will have its world premiere in New York at The Shed in September of 2023 (previews start on September 28th with official opening night on October 22, 2023).

On this occasion NYU KJCC, NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and the Luis Buñuel Film Institute have partnered in a series of events called “Buñuel NYC Takeover” to celebrate the life and pioneering vision of these two icons.

The first round of events will take place in September, 2023, with a series of screenings and a public event.

Friday, September 15, 7:00 pm:

The Exterminating Angel (1962) by Luis Buñuel

A group of high-society friends are invited to a mansion for dinner and find themselves inexplicably unable to leave, in Luis Buñuel’s daring masterpiece.

Saturday, September 16, 7:00 pm:

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) by Luis Buñuel.

In Luis Buñuel’s deliciously satiric masterpiece, an upper-middle-class sextet sits down to a dinner that is continually delayed, their attempts to eat thwarted by vaudevillian events both actual and imagined, including terrorist attacks, military maneuvers, and ghostly apparitions. The Oscar-winning pinnacle of Buñuel’s late-career ascent as a feted maestro of the international art house, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie is also one of his most gleefully radical assaults on the values of the ruling class.

Both films will be introduced by Mario Rufer, Fall 2023 KJCC Andrés Bello Chair in Latin American Cultures & Juan Manuel Avila, KJCC Public Humanities Doctoral Fellow.
