In celebration of NYU’s many talented translators and our Minor in Translation Studies, which launched in Fall 2022, Liberal Studies is hosting a Translation Slam!

This year’s Translation Slam spotlights translation from Classical Chinese to English and will be co-hosted by Professors Jennifer Zoble (LS) and Annelise Finegan (SPS). The featured poetry was taken from the libretto of Angel Island, a new work of opera-theater by Chinese composer Huang Ruo that explores the history of the Angel Island immigrant detention center using poems engraved on its walls by Chinese detainees. Huang Ruo will be joined by NYU undergraduate, graduate, and faculty translators, who will present their translations of poetry from Angel Island and will discuss their methods, the challenges posed by this material, and their broader work in conversation with one another and the audience.

Hosted by Liberal Studies (LS) in partnership with the Department of Comparative Literature and the School of Professional Studies (SPS) Master’s in Translation and Interpreting Program, and co-sponsored by the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, the PEN America Translation Committee, and Contingencies Journal.
