“A transatlantic musical voyage across Spanish music of today and yesterday. In partnership with the King Juan Carlos I Center at NYU, we will conversate with notable guest speakers of the heritage that makes the now of Spanish music.”

Defining flamenco or how its duende works is a challenge, and even more so with Niño de Elche’s deconstruction. An artist that dares to look at flamenco beyond stereotypes, often calling himself exflamenco. Niño de Elche, trained as a cantaor or flamenco singer, moved away from traditional flamenco and into multi-layered contemporary performance practice. Alongside his critically acclaimed musical recordings Voces del Extremo (2015) and Antología del Cante Flamenco Heterodoxo (2018), he has also undertaken artistic collaborations with artists like Angélica Liddell and Israel Galván. His heterodox artistic interests lead to his inclusion in the contemporary art fair Documenta 14 in Kassel as well as his recent collaboration with singer C. Tangana, with whom he released the song Un Veneno and Tú Me Dejaste de Querer (with over 111 million streams just on Spotify.) In 2019, he released Colombiana, self-described as shock therapy for the coexistence of Colombian and Iberian melodies. This past fall, in collaboration with Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, he revisited the work of an earlier heterodox artist José Val del Omar, whose work forms part of the museum’s multi-media collection.

Casilda García López is a senior at the Film & TV program at Tisch School of the Arts with a minor in Spanish and BEMT (Business for Entertainment, Media and Technology.) García López has a profound passion for Spanish-speaking music and cultures, and has received two DURF Research Grants to investigate the musical evolution in the Iberian Peninsula (from cuplé to trap 1926-2020) – her findings are shared in her WNYU radio show and writings. In 2019, she won Madrid’s León Felipe Youth Poetry Award and her poems can be found in the M-21 magazine or Esferas Journal.
