UPRISING/ALZAMIENTO
ARTISTIC AND JURIDICAL INTERVENTION IN CAPTIVE SPACES
Screening: Nos pintamos solas/Murals and Mirrors: Women Resisting Walls
Nos pintamos solas/Murals and Mirrors: Women Resisting Walls_tells the story of an uprising of women inside the Santa Martha Acatitla Female prison in México City. It shows us how women took the walls of a prison and in doing so, radically transformed prison space and prison time through a unique coming together of art, justice and education. _Murals and Mirrors_depicts female prisoners’ appropriation of justice itself through the intervention of muralism. The walls of the prison ceased to be opaque and grey, and came to reflect and illuminate women invisible voices and stories. This film shows us how, through the design and execution of four monumental murals inside prison, these dissonant women made visible both the distorted history of justice in México and their own histories.
