CREATIVE WRITING IN SPANISH: Celebrando los once años de la editorial Sangría (New York-Chile)

Mónica Ramón Ríos is a writer, editor, and scholar originally from Chile. Their work explores issues of money, capitalism, rage, revolution, archiving, pleasure, love, and utopia in women who migrate, write, and shoot films. They are the author of two novels, Alias el Rucio (and its evil twin Alias el Rocío) and Segundos, as well as essays exploring the intersection of film and Latin American literature. They hold a PhD in Spanish, and they currently teach gender and sexuality, Marxism, and Latin American culture at Pratt Institute, where they also organized a reading series of Latin American literature in translation. In 2008, they created Sangría Editora, a publisher based in Santiago de Chile and in New York, where, with their beloved collective, Ríos has edited more than sixty titles, including novels, essays, scripts, plays, and agit prop.

Carlos Labbé is a literary critic, writes columns on music and politics and has been part of Sangría publishing house since it’s beginning 11 years ago. He has published the hypernovel Pentagonal: incluidos tú y yo (2001), the novels Libro de plumas (2004), Navidad y Matanza (2007, translated to English and German), locuela (Translated to English and Turkish), Piezas secretas contra el mundo (2014), La parvá (2015) y Coreografías espirituales (2017), as well as the short story collections Caracteres blancos (2010) and Short the Seven Nightmares in Alebrijes (2015)/ Cortas pesadillas con alebrijes (2017).
