In celebration of the screening of Luis López Carrasco’s El año del descubrimiento (2020) at the Anthology Film Archives, KJCC is proud to host an online screening of El futuro (2013), his first solo film.
Synopsis: A group of young people dance and drink at a house. The atmosphere is festive and cheerful. Socialist victory in the general elections of 1982 seems recent. The night is full of euphoria and celebration. The attempt of coup d’etat made in 1981 appears to be quite far away. We could say that in Spain, in 1982, everything was future. However, the future also looks closer at enormous speed, like a black hole that devours everything in its path.
Luis López Carrasco (Murcia, Spain, 1981) is a filmmaker and writer. In 2008 he co-founded Los Hijos, an experimental cinema and documentary collective. His work has been shown in numerous international film festivals like Locarno, Rotterdam, Toronto, NYFF Film Society of Lincoln Center, BAFICI or Viennale and contemporary art centers like Museo Nacional Reina Sofía, Museo Guggenheim, Centre Georges Pompidou or ICA London.
El futuro, his first solo film, was premiered in Locarno International Film Festival 2013, screened in more than fifty international festivals and awarded in BAFICI 2014, Lima Independiente 2014, Uruguay Winter Festival 2014 and IBAFF 2014.
His second feature-length film, El año del descubrimiento, was premiered in the Tiger Awards of Rotterdam International Film Festival 2020 and has won the Gran Prix in Cinema du Reél 2020 (and ex aequo the Libraries Jury Prize), the Grand Jury Award of Seville European Film Festival, the Astor Piazzolla Award for Best Movie in Mar de Plata IFF, the Golden Alexander in Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival 2020 (FilmForward Section), the Special Jury Prize in Jeonju International Film 2020, the Best Movie Award in Olhar de Cinema (Novos Olhares, Curitiba, Brasil), the Young Jury Prize of BIFF Bogotá and the Special Jury Mention in Black Canvas Festival (México).
